چکیده
علم یک تلاش سامانمند انسانی برای فهم جهان فیزیکی است. فعالیت علمی توسط انسان انجام می‌شود و در خلاء انسانی فاقد معنا است. امّا بلافاصله این سؤال مطرح است که چرا انسانها بدنبال دانش طبیعت هستند؟ خود علم نمی‌تواند پاسخی برای این سؤال فراهم کند. یک چهارچوب جامع‌تر، یک جهان‌بینی، لازم است تا بتوان به این سؤال پاسخ گفت. درواقع جهان‌بینی است که کل فعالیت انسانی، ازجمله فعالیت علمی، را شکل می‌دهد، و این جهان‌بینی دانشمند است که هدف وی از تعقیب فعالیت علمی را معنادار می‌سازد.این مسأله که آیا علم خودش می‌تواند زندگی فردی و اجتماعی مطلوبی برای ما فراهم کند یا نه، سؤالی بود که در گفتگوی بین مورتیمر اَدلر، فیلسوف آمریکائی، و برتراند راسل در 1940 مطرح شد(1). راسل معتقد بود که دانش علمی تنها نوعِ معتبر دانش است

Science is a systematic human effort to understand the physical world. Scientific activity is carried out by humans and is meaningless in a human vacuum. But the immediate question is why humans seek knowledge of nature? Science itself cannot provide an answer to this question.
